It is not up to the victim to punish: theft is punished by the justice system. Generally, a court tries the offender and decides the penalty. For a theft of €300 or less, a fixed fine can also be imposed without a trial.

Ce n'est pas à la victime de punir : c'est la justice qui sanctionne le vol. En général, un tribunal juge l'auteur et décide de la peine. Pour un vol de 300 € ou moins, une amende forfaitaire peut aussi être infligée sans procès.
