Recite has no accounts, no ads and no tracking. This page says what leaves your phone, where it goes and why.
1. What stays on your phone
Your name, interview date, N-400 answers, address, progress, streak and settings are stored only on your phone. We don't have a copy. If your phone backs up apps to iCloud or your Google account, that backup can include this data, under Apple's or Google's terms.
2. Your voice
When you answer out loud, your phone's speech recognition turns your voice into text. When your phone supports it, this happens on the phone; otherwise Apple or Google processes the audio under their own privacy policies. Recite does not record or keep audio.
3. Checking answers
To check an answer, the text of what you said, or a picture of what you wrote, is sent with the question and its accepted answers to our grading service, which uses an AI model from Anthropic. For questions about your own senators, representative, governor or state capital, the accepted answers include their names. We don't keep any of it. Anthropic doesn't use it to train its models and keeps it only for the limited period set in its terms.
Each request also carries the app's random ID (see Purchases) and, like any internet request, your IP address. We use them only to limit how many answers can be checked per phone and per connection. These counts are deleted after 2 days. Cloudflare, which hosts the grading service, keeps technical request logs (time, IP address and the app's random ID, never your answers) for up to 7 days.
4. Your address
To find your representative and senators, your address is sent once to the U.S. Census Bureau's geocoder. It then stays on your phone.
5. Purchases
Payments go through Apple or Google. The app creates a random ID on your phone. RevenueCat uses it to confirm Premium, and our grading service uses it for the limits above. It isn't linked to your name or email.
6. Error reports
When the app crashes or something goes wrong, for example saved data that can't be read or a store error, it sends a short report to Expo, the company whose tools we use to build the app. A report says what kind of error happened and where in the app, with the app and system version, the phone model, how long the app took to start, and a random ID created by Expo's tools. It never includes your answers, your name, your address, anything you typed or the app's random ID from Purchases. Expo keeps reports for 90 days, and we use them only to find and fix bugs.
7. Our website
recitecitizen.com counts visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and doesn't follow you to other sites.
If you join the Android test or ask to hear when a country or the iPhone app launches, we keep your email address, your language and the page where you signed up for that purpose only. We delete the tester list once the Android app is public, and a launch list once we've sent that one email.
To stop automated abuse, Cloudflare Turnstile checks your browser when a sign-up form is shown on the page to confirm you're a person, and we count sign-ups and address lookups per IP address. Those counts are kept for about a minute.
When you look up your answers on the site, the ZIP code or address goes to our server to find your district; an address is passed to the U.S. Census Bureau's geocoder. We don't store either; our host's request logs, kept for up to 7 days, can include a ZIP code but never an address.
When you practice out loud on the site, your browser's own speech recognition turns your voice into text. Depending on the browser, its maker may process the audio, for example Google for Chrome, under their privacy policy.
8. Service providers
We work with Apple, Google, RevenueCat, Anthropic, Expo (error reports) and Cloudflare, which hosts our grading service and our website. Each one receives only what its part of the service needs.
9. What we never do
We don't sell or share your data, show ads, or use analytics that track you. We don't contact USCIS or any government agency about you.
10. Your choices
You can skip the address and erase your progress, answers and settings on your phone at any time from Me > Delete my data. The app's random ID stays in your phone's secure storage so that Premium keeps working, and on iPhone it can remain after you delete the app. Our grading service's counts linked to it are deleted after 2 days on their own. To have RevenueCat erase your purchase record, write to support@recitecitizen.com with the order number from Apple's or Google's receipt.
To remove your email from a list, write to support@recitecitizen.com.
11. Age
The app is meant for adults preparing for their naturalization interview. It is not intended for children under 13.
